We often get called out to replace roofs during storm season that have a little more to them that meets the eye.
Recently, in Stephenville, TX, we came upon a much older house that was a victim to extremely large hail. We knew there was going to be some decking damage and possibly some older rafter damage when we first arrived on location.
We did what we always do, start tearing the roof off and get to work, we are there to put on a new roof, after all. The issue here, as we find from time to time, was the extra layers on this roof. Extra layers are when there has been damage to a roof, but instead of tearing off, a new roof will just be overlayed on the existing shingles. Typically, when you encounter this, it had been done as a means to save some money by the homeowner.
This makes for a longer "tear-off" of the roof to get back to decking. It also increases the cost of disposing the roof as this is literally 2,3,4 times as many layers of roof being thrown away.
In this instance, we found 4 layers of shingles, two layers of wood shake, and open decking. We opened up many generations of roofing on one location!! Oddly, this was only on 2 sides of this roof, the other two were single layers with traditional decking.
We decked the two sections that were lacking, replaced decking where there were holes from the hail damage, and completed the job in great time even with the unforeseen issues. Once again, Jabeau was able to pull through and create another lifetime customer.
